SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 19-ranked Shippensburg University baseball team scored a season-high 11 runs on a frigid and misty Wednesday afternoon at Fairchild Field, getting two hits each from freshmen Isaac Stern and Matt Osenbach en route to an 11-4 victory over Pittsburgh-Johnstown.

Shippensburg (12-3) won its eighth straight game and got hits from seven of its nine starters. Stern launched his first collegiate home run on the second pitch of the sixth inning, singled, walked and scored four runs. Osenbach had been hitless in his first five collegiate at-bats before singling in his first two at-bats Wednesday, driving in a run in both the second and fourth innings.

Pittsburgh-Johnstown (5-10) scored a pair of runs in the first but only got two more in the game, scraping across one run in both the eighth and ninth inning. The Mountain Cats had eight hits and numerous scoring chances but left 14 runners on base. UPJ also used a different pitcher in each of the eight innings it took the field for defense.

Both teams were tentative at the start and tried their best to acclimate themselves to the frigid conditions and steady drizzle. Neither team was able to take batting practice or complete fielding drills before the game, as the maintenance necessary to get the field ready for the game led right up to the first pitch.

Senior Shawn Patterson shook off an early rut to get the win for Shippensburg, throwing five innings and allowing just one earned run. Patterson walked three and struck out three. SU used five relievers to get through the final four innings.

Senior Cal Hogan plated SU's first run on an unusual sacrifice fly, blooping a ball to short right-center field that was caught but in enough of a position with the fielder retreating to plate senior Pat Kregeloh. Fellow senior Michael Douglas also had a sacrifice fly later in the game.

Three Raiders contributed RBI-singles: junior Jimmy Spanos, freshman Vince Careghini and junior Austin Allison.

Shippensburg opens PSAC East play Friday when it hosts Mansfield at 1 p.m. from Fairchild Field.
