SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Pat Kregeloh struck out a career-high 10 batters in 7.1 innings of work on Sunday afternoon as the No. 22-ranked Shippensburg University baseball team defeated Le Moyne, 6-4, in a nine-inning affair to sweep the four-game weekend home series over the Dolphins from Fairchild Field.
The victory runs the Raider (11-3) winning streak to seven games as the SU pitching staff finished the series allowing just six earned runs to the Dolphins (5-12) in 32 total innings – a 1.69 earned-run average.
Kregeloh weathered early trouble – he gave up four runs through four innings – before settling down to retire 11 consecutive batters from the fifth inning through the first out of the eighth. He allowed seven hits and a pair of walks in a 126-pitch effort.
Sophomore
Kyle McClintock recorded the final two outs of the eighth – including a strikeout swinging for the final out with a man on second and SU clinging to a one-run lead – before senior
Austin Bartley earned his fourth save of the season with a three-up, three-down ninth inning.
Junior first baseman
Jimmy Spanos went 3-for-4 while senior center fielder
Michael Douglas went 2-for-3 with a two-run, bases-clearing triple in the second inning. Freshman second baseman
Ryan McMillen also drove in a run while junior right fielder
Austin Allison scored twice.
Le Moyne got out to a 1-0 lead with a run scored on a passed ball on the second, but Shippensburg answered in the bottom half of the frame with runs on a fielding error at third base and a passed ball before Douglas's triple scored McMillen and Allison and put the Raiders ahead 4-1.
The Dolphins added a pair of runs in the third with a two-run single before the teams exchanged runs in the fourth with a Le Moyne RBI single that tied the game at 4-4 preceding a McMillen RBI groundout put SU back ahead 5-4.
Kregeloh then got into a groove, recording six of his 10 strikeouts in the fifth through seventh innings. Shippensburg added a key insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a fielding error by the Le Moyne shortstop.
