SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Dylan Edgar hit a pair of free throws with four seconds remaining in a tie game Saturday as the Shippensburg University men's basketball team out-lasted longtime PSAC West rival Edinboro, 57-53, in the final league game before the holidays from Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (6-4, 2-4 PSAC) had to weather one last possession from Edinboro (5-5, 3-4) following the free throws, but Fighting Scot guard Jaymon Mason was whistled for a push-off as he advanced up the floor to attempt a final shot. Sophomore
Abe Massaley hit two free throws with a second left to produce the final margin.
Edgar finished with game highs of 20 points and 11 rebounds for his sixth double-double in 10 games and his third 20-point effort of the year. A career 50-percent free-throw shooter, Edgar – who was battling fatigue late in a hard-fought game – hit both ends of what was a 1-and-1 scenario that broke the contest out of its ninth tie score.
Massaley had 19 points, shooting 6-of-12 from the field and making 6-of-7 attempts at the free-throw line. The 39 combined points from Edgar and Massaley accounted for 68 percent of the Raider scoring in the game.
Saturday's contest was a seesaw affair that featured 18 lead changes. Neither team scored more than 30 points in either half. The largest lead of the game for either team was an Edinboro six-point advantage early in the second half. SU matched a season low with eight turnovers (Edinboro had just 10).
SU got 28 big minutes off the bench from junior
A.J. Maun, who was magic on 2-of-4 attempts from three-point range. In addition to his six points, Maun contributed valuable defense and was the only Raider in the game with multiple assists. He also had just one turnover.
Excluding Maun's 2-of-4 line, SU was just 1-of-12 (8.3 percent) from three-point range in the contest. Edinboro entered the game averaging more three-pointers per game than any team in the league but finished just 5-of-14 (35 percent) from distance.
The Raiders were out-rebounded by five, but freshman
Dustin Sleva maintained a solid post presence with eight rebounds. He had four points, making 2-of-3 shot attempts from the field.
Shippensburg held the visitors to just 37.9-percent shooting, marking the fourth time in the last five PSAC contests that it held its opponent to less than 40 percent from the field. Saturday's game also continued SU's stretch of close games with league opponents, as five of its six PSAC contests have been decided by six points or less.
Shippensburg returns to action January 3 and 4 with 3 p.m. home games against Mercyhurst and Gannon – currently the Top 2 teams in the PSAC Western Division. SU has three games remaining with Western Division opponents, all of which count toward the team's PSAC divisional record.
The bench celebrates late in the game.
