The Shippensburg University women's basketball team had eight players score at least eight points on Sunday and shot 60 percent from the field as it never trailed in a lopsided 106-68 victory over the Chargers of Dominican (N.Y.) at the 2014 Pocono Classic hosted by East Stroudsburg University.
Shippensburg (4-2), winners of three games this week by an average margin of 38 points, set records this weekend for the most points scored in a Pocono Classic game in the 26-year history of the women's tournament as well as the most points scored in two Pocono Classic games (193).
Dominican (3-5), who defeated host East Stroudsburg on Saturday, was limited to 33-percent shooting from the field despite committing just nine turnovers and getting a game-high 21 points from Lisa Bouffard.
The Raiders shot 60 percent from the field in each half, including a 20-of-33 effort in the first half that included 21 bench points and a 12-of-15 performance at the free-throw line.
SU was dominant on the glass, out-rebounding Dominican by a 43-28 margin (21-11 in first half). The Raiders also handed out 24 assists to just 11 turnovers.
The Raiders held a 34-22 lead over the Chargers with 6:08 remaining in the first half before closing the frame on a 22-6 run. SU then began the second half on 12-2 run and led by as many as 42 points in the game.
Sophomore
Morgan Griffith, named the 2014 Pocono Classic MVP, scored 16 points Sunday on 6-of-9 shooting with a team-high eight rebounds. Griffith also had four assists and was 4-of-4 at the free-throw line. In two games this weekend, Griffith scored 33 points on 10-of-17 shooting, corralled 19 rebounds, shot 11-of-12 at the free-throw line and hit a pair of three-pointers.
Junior
Stephanie Knauer provided 15 points on 6-of-6 shooting and had five rebounds. Knauer had 12 of those points before making a cameo appearance in the second half. In two games this weekend, Knauer, an All-Pocono Classic selection, had 29 points on 11-of-16 shooting (68.8 percent).
Freshman
Vicky Tumasz is thriving in her current role as the first player off the bench for the Raiders. She led Shippensburg in Sunday's game with 20 points in 29 minutes off the bench, shooting 6-of-9 from three-point range and handing out three assists. Tumasz was SU's third All-Pocono Classic Team selection, finishing the weekend with 33 points in two games, shooting 56 percent from the field, and making 9-of-14 from three-point range.
All three women had 12 points by halftime in Sunday's game. Sophomore
Haley Scullion had nine points and four rebounds in the first half, while freshman
Kristin McGeough contributed eight points and five rebounds in 10 second-half minutes.
Sophomore
Lauren Gold was a sterling distributor, handing out eight assists without a turnover in 25 minutes. It is her fourth career start without a turnover, as the sophomore guard finished the weekend with 14 assists and zero turnovers in 49 minutes on the floor. Gold also scored nine points on Sunday, making 7-of-8 at the free-throw line.
Sophomore
Colleen Young scored 13 points, marking her second double-digit effort of the season, while redshirt-freshman
Victoria Blackburn provided nine points off the bench. Sophomore
Logan Snyder had five points, three assists and three rebounds.
SU also tied a Pocono Classic record in making 28 free throws on 35 attempts; the Raiders shot a season-high 80 percent from the line in each half.
Shippensburg returns to PSAC Eastern Division play at 6 p.m. Wednesday when it hosts East Stroudsburg inside Heiges Field House.
Notes: The previous record for points scored in a women's Pocono Classic game was 98, achieved by Norfolk State in 1990 over Molloy…the previous record for points in two tournament games was 179, also by Norfolk State in 1990.
