SEVERN, Md. – Freshman
Emily Barnard tipped in an entry from outside the box by sophomore
Suzanne Muller on the second of two untimed penalty corners Sunday afternoon as the No. 2 Shippensburg University field hockey team prevailed over No. 5 Limestone, 1-0, in a neutral-site game at Archbishop Spalding High School.
Shippensburg (8-1) managed its victory over previously unbeaten Limestone (9-1) as the result of Barnard's fifth goal of the year and her first career game-winner. Muller received a corner from
Tori Ricker and sent a hard, low shot into the circle that Barnard tipped from the middle, sending the ball high and over the right arm of Limestone's keeper.
SU appeared to have won the game on its first un-timed penalty corner, as senior
Lucy Kauffman tipped a shot over the goal line from the right edge of the box, but the official had already whistled for the next penalty corner as Kauffman was re-directing the feed.
The Raiders managed an 11-4 advantage in shots and a 13-6 margin in penalty corners.
Freshman goalkeeper
Ally Mooney made four saves in recording her third solo shutout of the season. Her fourth and final save was arguably her most important, as she made a splendid play with just more than eight minutes remaining – coming well out of her cage to neutralize an odd-man break and cut down the angle on an oncoming shot.
Shippensburg now has five days to prepare for No. 3 West Chester, as the two PSAC arch-rivals will meet at noon Saturday from Robb Sports Complex.
