No. 3 Field Hockey Shuts Out No. 10 The Rock, 3-0, As Landes Nets Win No. 450

Barnard scores twice; Landes earns 266th win at SU and 450th overall in 35 years

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 3 Shippensburg University field hockey team held visiting No. 10 Slippery Rock without a penalty corner on a warm and sunny Tuesday afternoon at Robb Sports Complex as it posted a 3-0 shutout, marking the 450th career coaching victory for NFHCA Hall of Fame head coach Bertie Landes.

Shippensburg (12-3, 9-3 PSAC) got a pair of goals from freshman forward Emily Barnard, who increased her season total to seven, before sophomore Katelyn Grazan rounded out the scoring with nine minutes to play.

Barnard opened the scoring at 13:46 by lunging forward from the right edge of the scoring arc to re-direct home a nifty pass from Grazan. In the second half, Barnard slammed home a feed from sophomore Cassie Rawa at 50:52 to extend the Raider lead.

Slippery Rock (9-7, 7-5), newly re-christened as the No. 10 team in the country on Tuesday, entered the match with a school-record five-game winning streak. It managed just four shots in the contest, most coming on tip attempts from the outer reaches of the scoring arc.

SU freshman goalkeeper Ally Mooney made two saves in 60 minutes before she was replaced by junior Taylor Webster.

After SU recorded 11 penalty corners in the first half, neither team managed a penalty corner in the second half.

Landes, currently in her 16th season at the helm of the Raiders, has guided Shippensburg to a 266-67-1 record for a winning percentage of .798. Including her 19 seasons at Cairn (Philadelphia Bible) University, Landes career record now stands at 450-123-17 for a career winning percentage of .777.

At SU, Landes has never had a losing season. In nine of her 16 seasons, the Raiders have lost four games or less, including five-in-a-row.

Shippensburg now has a full week off before returning to action Wednesday, November 5 in a pivotal 2 p.m. conference match at East Stroudsburg. SU is the No. 3 team in the NCAA Atlantic Region Rankings released last Wednesday, while East Stroudsburg is No. 5. The Top 3 teams in each region qualify for the NCAA Tournament.
