SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University field hockey team used a second-half goal from freshman
Kylie Huffman to fend off PSAC opponent Kutztown, 2-1, on a blustery and chilly evening from Robb Sports Complex.
The Raiders (11-2, 8-2 PSAC) opened the scoring in the 10th minute when sophomore
Suzanne Muller ripped a shot with velocity past the goalkeeper from the middle of the circle. The goal came off a penalty corner and was assisted by senior
Lucy Kauffman.
The Golden Bears (6-7, 4-5) scored the equalizer in the 26th minute after tapping in a rebound on the left side of the cage.
Huffman scored her first collegiate goal in the 46th minute, which ultimately proved to be the game-winning tally, after Kauffman fired a shot that Huffman, who was standing in the middle of the arc, re-directed high into the top right section of the net.
Kutztown had one final chance with an untimed penalty corner at the end of regulation – its first penalty corner of the match, but SU foiled the last-second chance for the Golden Bears.
SU held a 27-4 advantage in shots that included a 20-2 edge in the second half, and the Raiders held a 15-1 advantage in penalty corners.
The Raiders return to action at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mercyhurst from Tullio Field.
