Molly Stuart scored on an untimed penalty corner at the end of regulation Tuesday to propel the No. 3 Shippensburg University field hockey team to a 2-1 upset victory of No. 1 Millersville at Biemesderfer Stadium.
Â
Shippensburg (9-2, 7-2 PSAC) handed Millersville (9-1, 7-1) its first loss of the season by scoring on Stuart's deep shot in the arc off a pass from senior
Lucy Kauffman.
Â
It was SU's second chance to score at the end of regulation, as its untimed corner was drawn during another penalty corner that was in progress as the clock struck zero.
Â
After falling behind 1-0 in the first half, sophomore
Cassie Rawa tied the score at 26:37 on a penalty corner by deflecting a blistering entry from sophomore
Suzanne Muller high over MU keeper Lauren Sotzin.
Â
It was SU's only shot on goal in the first half.
Â
Millersville recorded a 20-8 advantage in shots and drew 17 penalty corners, but SU freshman goalkeeper
Ally Mooney made a career-high 11 saves for the Raiders.
Â
SU also had to navigate a stretch of play late in the second half in which it had just nine players on the field, as the Raiders were issued a pair of yellow cards within a four-minute span.
Â
Four of SU's seven penalty corners came in the final 90 seconds of play, including three in the final minute. Nine of Mooney's 11 saves came in the first half.
Â
The two teams entered Tuesday's game ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the country for goals-against average, as the Marauders had yielded just four and the Raiders five.
Â
Shippensburg travels to Mansfield on Saturday for a noon matchup with the Mountaineers.
