SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's soccer team used a pair of second-half goals by redshirt-freshman Robert Furfaro to capture a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Goldey-Beacom Friday night at David See Field in the team's 2013 season opener.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first half, Shippensburg (1-0) knotted up the score in the 68th minute following a corner kick when Furfaro collected a rebound and knocked in a shot to the left side of the goal.

The Raiders took control of the lead in the 75th minute with another goal by Furfaro. The play was started by senior Jonathan DeNicola taking the ball up the right side of the field and issuing a textbook centering pass where he found Furfaro in position to score the game-winning goal.

"At halftime we knew we were playing well, but we had just been unfortunate," said head coach Jeremy Spering. "Give the guys credit, they basically went out and kept going after it and as a result, we got the result."

Goldey-Beacom (0-1) recorded the first tally in the fifth minute with a one-touch strike by Andre Jank from 25 yards that found the upper-left corner of the goal.

Furfaro's two-goal performance gives him his first two tallies of his collegiate career.

The Raiders out-shot the Lightning 19-5, including a margin of 15-3 in the second half. SU also managed a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

"Mentally, we have the reassurance and the confirmation that we're playing well," Spering said. "We just have to be patient and when the chances come, take it."

Shippensburg returns to action on Sunday in a non-conference contest against Holy Family at 5:30 p.m. from David See Field.
