Derrick Roy netted a golden goal with 2:47 left in overtime Saturday night as the Shippensburg University men's soccer team picked up its first road win of the season by defeating the Gannon Golden Knights, 3-2 in Erie.
Roy notched the game-winning goal in the 108th minute after he was set up by senior
Oli Templeton and also had the equalizer in the 83rd minute to send the game into overtime after receiving a helper from junior
Josh Gannon.
The Raiders (4-2-1, 1-1 PSAC) started the offensive effort early when senior
Patrick Urmson delivered a pass to junior
Chris Black, who netted the game's first tally in the 11th minute.
SU rode its 1-0 lead well into the second half before Gannon (2-6, 1-3) tallied consecutive goals in the 66th and 71st minutes to put them ahead 2-1.
After Roy sent the game into overtime, the Raiders had multiple chances to capture the victory in the first overtime period. In the first 10 minutes of OT, the Raiders out-shot the Golden Knights 5-0 with shots by Templeton and sophomore
Brooke Moyer hitting the post.
The game was full of clanging posts for each side, as
Josh Gannon hit the crossbar for SU in the 26th minute while both of the Golden Knight goals came as the direct result of shots that hit a pipe.
Roy's two-goal performance now gives him a team-leading four goals on the season and makes him the fourth different Raider to record a game-winning goal this year.
Senior
Clay Sale recorded his fourth win of the season in goal with a four-save performance.
Shippensburg out-shot Gannon, 19-16, while the teams finished tied in corner kicks, 7-7.
Shippensburg returns home Wednesday to host Millersville at 5 p.m. from David See Field.
