The Shippensburg University women's volleyball team suffered its first loss of the 2013 season on Friday afternoon against host West Liberty in four sets before rebounding in the evening with a five-set victory over Charleston to split its two matches on the first day of a Mountain East crossover from the Hilltoppers' Academic, Sports and Recreation Complex.
The Raiders (7-1) lost to West Liberty (3-6) by set scores of 20-25, 25-18, 21-25 and 22-25. SU defeated Charleston (5-2) by set scores of 25-21, 28-26, 23-25, 20-25 and 15-12.
Despite hitting a season-high .321 as a team, totaling a season-high 33 block assists and double-doubles from senior
Jill Edwards (14 kills, 10 digs) and freshman
Gabbie Holt (12 kills, 11 digs) in the opener, the Raiders couldn't overcome the host Hilltoppers as SU suffered its first loss of 2013 in its seventh match.
Shippensburg had more success in the second match, with SU recording a season-high 61 kills and several players recording career highs. Senior
Samantha Edwards ripped a career-best 23 kills on 65 total attacks while sophomore
Faith Athey recorded a career-high 10 total blocks (nine assists) to go along with her eight block assists in the first match.
The Raiders recorded 111 digs in the victory – the most they've had since also totaling 111 vs. IUP on Sept. 17, 2010 – with
Jill Edwards making a career-high 26 digs to go along with 19 kills.
Freshman
Maria Peluso recorded a career-high 32 digs – the most a Raider has had in a match since
Lauren Murphy posted 33 against Clarion on Oct. 8, 2011 – and finished the day with 47 digs in both matches.
Holt and freshman
Maura Nolan each had 14 digs against Charleston, with Nolan recording 47 assists after recording 34 earlier in the day.
Sophomore
Taylor Gottshall finished the day with 12 block assists in addition to her nine kills while sophomore
Laura Plank had a career-best 13 digs against the Golden Eagles.
The Raiders will play two more Mountain East crossover games tomorrow from Wheeling, W.Va. SU will face Fairmont State at 2 p.m. before squaring off against host Wheeling Jesuit at 4 p.m. A video feed of the games can be accessed
