SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team split its final doubleheader of the 2013 regular season on Saturday against PSAC Eastern Division rival Mansfield and was eliminated from PSAC playoff contention after West Chester earned a pair of extra-inning, walk-off victories over Kutztown.

Shippensburg (28-20, 11-13 PSAC East) attempted a late rally in the opening game but fell, 5-4, to Mansfield. The Raiders scored twice in the sixth inning of Game 2 to earn an 8-6 victory in the nightcap. This weekend's series is the only one this season in which Shippensburg split with its opponent (SU had either taken 3-of-4 or lost 3-of-4 in the other five).

Junior Pat Kregeloh added three more hits and RBIs on Saturday, including a two-run homer, to finish the weekend series 8-for-15 at the plate. He finishes the regular season with eight home runs and 53 RBIs – the latter of which is just eight shy of the single-season school record (61) shared by Wayne Gordon (1986) and Scott Rhodes (1991).

Freshman Mike Marcinko had two hits and a run in each game, while senior Tyler Shover and junior Cal Hogan each totaled three hits in the doubleheader.

The Game 1 loss marked the 10th time this season that SU lost a game by just one run. Eight of SU's 10 one-run losses came in PSAC Eastern Division play. Ten of SU's 13 PSAC Eastern Division losses came by just one or two runs.

SU, ranked fifth in the NCAA Atlantic Region Rankings, will await the announcement of the NCAA Tournament field on Sunday, May 12 at 10 p.m.

Of note, Concord (W.Va.) – currently unranked – won the WVIAC Tournament to earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. Winston-Salem State, the region's No. 1 seed, won the CIAA Tournament last week. Six teams will advance to the NCAA Atlantic Region Championships.

Game 1: Mansfield 5, Shippensburg 4

The Mountaineers controlled the opening game until the bottom of the seventh inning, when SU began its rally. Marcinko and Hollingsworth led off with singles before junior Michael Douglas tripled them both home. Two batters later, Kregeloh crushed a 1-1 pitch over the left-field fence that made the score 5-4.

Senior Tom Bush dropped his record to 5-4 after allowing five runs on eight hits in five innings, walking three and striking out two. Freshman Rich Michaud threw two hitless innings of relief, striking out three.

Game 2: Shippensburg 8, Mansfield 6

SU fell behind 2-0 in the second inning before tying it in the bottom of the frame off RBI-singles from Shover and Marcinko. Shover went 2-for-2 with 3 RBIs and a run in the nightcap.

The Raiders took a 3-2 lead in the fourth after sophomore Jimmy Spanos led off with a triple and came home one batter later on a Shover RBI-single.

Three more runs came across the plate in the fifth for Shippensburg. A leadoff walk by Douglas and a bunt single by Hogan put two men on for Kregeloh, who singled on the first pitch to make it 4-2. Kulp then singled home Hogan, resulting in a pitching change. Spanos then singled to load the bases before Shover hit the first pitch he saw to left field for a sacrifice fly. A double play ended the inning.

Undaunted, Mansfield rallied in the sixth to tie the game. The Raiders used three pitchers in the inning, as starter Nick Massetti was chased after allowing a single and a walk. Junior Austin Bartley came out of the bullpen and struck out the next two batters before issuing a walk to load the bases.

Bartley then induced a weak ground ball off the bat of Max Miller but it trickled through the right side, making the score 6-3 and keeping the bases loaded. Seth Tressler then came to the plate and sent a gapper into left-center field that cleared the bases and made the score 6-6.

SU wasted no time re-claiming the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Marcinko doubled to lead off the inning and Hollingsworth came off the bench to pinch hit. He sent the first pitch he saw into right-center field for a double of his own, making the score 7-6 in favor of Shippensburg. After a sacrifice bunt by Douglas, Hogan singled home Hollingsworth to make it 8-6.

Massetti ended up with a no-decision, allowing four runs on seven hits in five-plus innings of work. He walked just one and struck out four. Freshman Marcus Shippey got the win in relief, improving to 3-0. He got the final out of the sixth inning and pitched a scoreless seventh.
