Sophomore Derek Nothstein achieved a NCAA provisional qualifying throw in the javelin Saturday as a mid-sized contingent of the Shippensburg University men's track & field team competed at the Millersville Metrics.

Nothstein matched the second-best throw of his young career, landing a heave of 212 feet, 7 inches that is less than four feet shy of the NCAA automatic qualifier. He also threw the same distance at the Paul Kaiser Classic last season. Sophomore Andrew Korrubin placed fourth with a conference-qualifying throw of 183 feet, 7 inches.

Among the standout marks of the day were several field performances. Sophomore Charlito Iwuagwu threw a season PR in the shot of 47 feet, 4 ½ inches and won the discus with a throw of 159 feet, 1 inch. He also achieved his PSAC qualifier in the hammer as a result of a 144-foot, 10-inch toss.

Sophomore Jesse Fogg placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 140 feet, 8 inches while sophomore Tyler Kerstetter picked up a conference qualifier in the hammer (149 feet). Junior Chris Nelson was SU's pace-setter in the hammer on Saturday with a throw of 160 feet, 9 inches.

Junior Adam Phillippi finished in a tie atop the pole vault standings by clearing 14 feet, 7 ¼ inches.

On the track, freshman Braden Bruning (4:03.37) and sophomore Nick Libbi (4:03.74) ran conference qualifiers in the 1,500 meters while freshman Chris Mullin earned one in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:51.29.

SU finished fourth in the scored meet with 89 points, finishing behind three PSAC schools that brought more athletes to the meet.

Shippensburg will be in action next weekend with its annual trek to Bucknell for the Bison Outdoor Classic. SU's multis competitors will head to Kutztown during the week.
