SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's track & field team had an impressive effort at its only home event of the season, posting seven NCAA provisional qualifiers, breaking three meet records and totaling 39 conference qualifying performances on a picturesque Saturday at the Ninth Annual Paul Kaiser Classic held at Seth Grove Stadium.
In the field, a pair of jumpers posted season PR and provisional marks that should get them to nationals. Freshman
Jalen Ramsey convincingly won the high jump by clearing 6 feet, 9 ¾ inches. Ramsey now leads the PSAC and ranks 12th in Division II for his performance.
Across the infield, sophomore
Steve Waithe was one of two competitors to break the meet record in the triple jump. Waithe landed an impressive mark of 50 feet, 2 ½ inches that puts him atop the PSAC and ranks him seventh in Division II. Waithe was an All-American last season in the triple jump as a freshman.
Senior
Herman Kirkland posted a NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the long jump for the second consecutive day. He followed up his Friday effort at the Penn Relays (24' 3 ½”) by placing second on Saturday with a mark of 24 feet, 2 ½ inches.
Sophomore
Matthew Terry also had an impressive day at the pits, posting a PR in the long jump (23' 4 ½”) and matching his PR in the triple jump (46' 8 ¼”). He now ranks second in the PSAC in the long jump and third in the triple jump.
The Raiders were thoroughly impressive on the track, winning five events and the 4x100-meter relay. Junior
Matt Kujawski broke the meet record in the 200 meters – winning in a personal-best time of 21.68 seconds – and posted a second-place time of 10.72 seconds in the 100 meters. He ranks first in the PSAC in both events.
SU went 1-2-3 in the 800 meters, with senior
Joel Flott and sophomore
Tom Kehl posting NCAA provisional qualifying times and junior
Dan Dreeman placing third. Flott established a new meet record with a splendid PR of 1:51.71, while Kehl crossed the finish line in 1:52.36. The two men rank third and fifth respectively in a talented and deep PSAC pool of 800-meter runners.
Sophomore
Robert Bales now tops the PSAC rankings in the 400 meters after winning the event Saturday with a time of 48.35 seconds. Bales also ran on the victorious 4x100-meter relay with Kirkland, Waithe and Kujawski in addition to anchoring the 4x400-meter relay that placed second.
Sophomore
Eric Bologa posted another NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing second to Kutztown's Kori Meshaw after posting a time of 52.84 seconds. Bologa was also SU's pace-setter in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 15.57 seconds. Sophomore
Jordan Jones ran the 400 hurdles in 54.22 seconds – a new PR that slots him fifth in the PSAC rankings for the event.
Other event winners included sophomore
Ryan Spangler in the 1,500 meters (3:53.58) and freshman
Chris Mullin in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:46.34). Both men narrowly missed their season PRs in their respective events.
In throws, sophomore
Derek Nothstein threw another impressive NCAA provisional qualifier in the javelin. His first-place mark of 207 feet, 3 inches bested SU alum and former national champion Nate Reider, who took second with a throw of 201 feet, 11 inches.
Sophomore
Charlito Iwuagwu notched season PRs in the shot put (49' 0 ¼”) and the hammer (161' 4”) that put him among the PSAC's Top 10 in both events. Iwuagwu also took second in the discus (157' 7”) while junior
Chris Nelson placed second in the hammer (167' 6”). Sophomore
Jesse Fogg landed a huge PR in the discus of 148 feet, 8 inches that ranks him sixth in the conference.
Shippensburg will compete next Friday at Penn State in the Jim Thorpe Invitational.
