HARRISBURG, Pa. — Senior
Cody Kulp went 4-for-5 with a Game 1 home run on Saturday at Metro Bank Park and junior
Pat Kregeloh slammed a three-run home run in Game 2 as the Shippensburg University baseball team rallied for a split with Kutztown, winning the nightcap 8-2 after dropping the opener 7-3.
Shippensburg (17-8, 4-4 PSAC East) falls to fourth place in the PSAC Eastern Division standings through two weeks of play, as both Kutztown (17-5, 7-1 PSAC East) and West Chester (16-9-1, 7-1 PSAC East) are in second place after taking 3-of-4 games in their respective series this weekend. Millersville (18-8, 4-0 PSAC East) is in first place after sweeping Bloomsburg this weekend.
SU trailed 3-0 in the fifth inning of the opener until a two-out rally made it a one-run game. With Kulp on third base, sophomore
Bobby Atwell doubled him home to get the Raiders on the scoreboard. After a wild pitch, freshman
Mike Marcinko singled home Atwell. Marcinko went 3-for-5 with a walk and two runs in two games from the nine-spot on Saturday.
KU broke the first game open after a pair of leadoff singles in the sixth eventually came around to score after a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt. Kulp hit a frozen rope over the right-center field fence in the seventh inning of the opener – a ball that carried more than 360 feet – to round out the scoring. Junior
Shawn Patterson (5 IP, 4 ER, 2 K) fell to 4-1.
Kregeloh's majestic three-run shot came in the first inning of Game 2, landing several rows into the seats inside the left-field foul pole. It jump-started an early scoring barrage for the Raiders, who led 5-2 after three innings. Kulp and sophomore
Jimmy Spanos hit sacrifice flies in the bottom of the third inning after Hogan, senior
Tyler Shover and Kregeloh each singled to lead off the frame.
Shover was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored at the plate in Game 2 – he singled home a pair of runs in the fourth and hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth. He also gunned down a runner trying to steal in each game – increasing his caught stealing total to 13 for the season. Shover has thrown out 46.4 percent of opposing base runners this year.
Junior
Cal Hogan continued his solid production at the plate with a 3-for-6 afternoon. Hogan had five hits and drew three walks in the four games played this weekend.
Sophomore
Nick Massetti earned his first collegiate victory after scattering two runs on six hits over four innings while striking out four. Freshman
Rich Michaud threw two strong innings in relief while junior
Austin Bartley came out of the bullpen in both games, recording four outs. Freshman
Marcus Shippey threw 1.2 innings in the opening game, allowing an unearned run.
Shippensburg is back in action at 3 p.m. Wednesday from Fairchild Field when it hosts IUP in a nine-inning game. Wednesday's game was re-scheduled from March 25.
