KUTZTOWN, Pa. — The Shippensburg University baseball team committed crucial mistakes at critical times on a windy and brisk Friday afternoon from North Campus Field, dropping both games of its PSAC East doubleheader with Kutztown by one run. SU lost by scores of 4-3 and 6-5, allowing six unearned runs in the process.
Shippensburg (16-7, 3-3 PSAC East) scored two runs in the first inning of both games Friday but could not maintain either advantage. Kutztown (16-4, 6-0 PSAC East) countered in the first game with two first-inning runs of its own and rallied from a 4-0 second-inning deficit in the second game to tie the score at 5-5 after three innings.
SU held a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning of the opener, but an error on a double-play ball prolonged the frame and allowed the Golden Bears to score the tying and go-ahead runs.
In the second game, another misplay on a double-play grounder led to three runs in the second inning, and an errant throw on a grounder with two outs resulted in a pair of unearned runs for KU in the third inning.
Despite the errors, SU had its chances at the plate as well but stranded 22 runners over the course of the doubleheader (11 in each game).
