In a battle of two of the top three teams in the latest Atlantic Region rankings, the No. 22-ranked Shippensburg University women's soccer team fell victim to a goal in the 87th minute in a 1-0 loss to No. 7 California (Pa.) on Wednesday afternoon in a pivotal PSAC contest from Cal's Phillipsburg Complex.
The Raiders (11-5, 10-5 PSAC) managed just two shots against the Vulcans (14-2-1, 14-1-0), who netted the game-winner off the foot of Haley Henderson on a rebound off her own shot that had been saved by SU senior goalkeeper
Shelbie Rackley (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley) (seven saves).
The victory allowed California (Pa.) to clinch its third-straight PSAC regular-season title as well as the No. 1 seed and the hosting rights for the upcoming PSAC Tournament.
The Raiders return to David See Field on Saturday for their regular-season home finale against Slippery Rock at 3:30 p.m. on Senior Day. Before the game, SU will honor its six seniors: Rackley,
Kylee Bricker,
Rachel Hess,
Meghan Mahon,
Ashley Vellucci and
Kate Zech.
The Rock has already secured the No. 2 seed in the PSAC Tournament. A win over SRU on Saturday would earn the Raiders a home game in the PSAC Quarterfinals on Tues., Nov. 5, as either a No. 3 or No. 4 seed.
