SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Derrick Roy recorded the first Raider hat trick in more than six years and senior
Patrick Urmson tied a school single-game record with three assists on Friday night as the Shippensburg University men's soccer team scored six goals for the second consecutive game in a shutout of PSAC newcomer Pitt-Johnstown from David See Field.
The Raiders (8-5-1, 5-3 PSAC) took twice as many shots as the Mountain Cats (2-13, 0-9) and played a man down for the majority of the second half yet managed to score three goals in each half to cruise to the victory.
The last Raider to net a hat trick was Jason Miller, who scored three goals in a 7-0 victory against Kutztown on Oct. 1, 2007. Entering last weekend, that contest was the last time SU had scored six or more goals against a PSAC opponent, but SU has now done it twice in a seven-day span (the Raiders defeated Bloomsburg 6-0 last Saturday).
Urmson's three helpers tied Mike Belcher (vs. Villanova, 1974), Kevin Stuck (vs. Mt. St. Mary's, 1988) and Jake Deininger (vs. Pitt-Johnstown, 2003) for the most in a single game in program history.
All three of Urmson's assists came on the first three goals of the game, including teaming up with Roy on a double-assist on the first goal of the season for sophomore
Derek Adams.
Junior
Chris Black scored two minutes into the second half while senior
Logan Kuhn added an assist on Roy's third goal and scored in the 57th minute to close out the scoring.
Roy's seven points on the night fell one short of tying the school single-game record of eight, set on three other occasions (last: 1991). The seven points were the most for a Raider since Andy Jennings also had three goals and an assist in a win over Goldey-Beacom on Sept. 28, 2004.
Friday night's scoring output was the most for SU at home since it also scored six in a win against Washington Adventist on Sept. 5, 2010.
Senior goalkeeper
Kevin Hollasch earned his first start of the season and made three saves while recording his first career shutout.
SU's 15 conference points puts it tied for fifth with Gannon in the PSAC standings with three regular season games remaining. The top six teams qualify for the PSAC playoffs.
Shippensburg hosts Seton Hill tomorrow at 6 p.m. in its Senior Day contest from David See Field. In a pregame ceremony, SU will honor its eight seniors:
Casey Bellamy,
Jonathan DeNicola, Hollasch, Kuhn,
Alex Prosser,
Clay Sale,
Oli Templeton and Urmson.
