Five different Raiders tallied a goal Saturday afternoon as the Shippensburg University men's soccer team defeated Bloomsburg, 6-0, in a PSAC matchup at Sports Satdium.
Shippensburg's offensive barrage started early in the tilt when freshman
Colin McConnell netted the game's first tally off a corner in the second minute of play.
Derrick Roy and
Jonathan DeNicola both assisted on the play as DeNicola sent the kick in from the corner and Roy set up McConnell for the goal.
The Raiders (7-5-1, 4-3 PSAC) added to their first-half lead in the 16th minute when junior
Fred Lucas notched his first of two tallies on the day.
SU entered halftime leading 2-0, while holding an 8-2 lead in shots and a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Shippensburg did not let up in the second half as four more goals were added to bring the total to six on the day.
James Connor started the second-half scoring effort in the 49th minute after he received helpers from
Robert Furfaro and
Alex Prosser.
Furfaro,
Logan Kuhn and a second goal by Lucas rounded out the scoring for the Raiders.
The last time Shippensburg recorded six or more goals against a conference opponent was back on Oct. 1, 2007 in a 7-0 win over Kutztown.
In addition to a stellar offensive performance, SU turned in a stingy defensive effort by limiting Bloomsburg (5-9-1, 3-5-1) to just five total shots and only two on goal. Shippensburg also held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Clay Sale turned in a two-save performance in goal for the Raiders and his fourth clean sheet of the season.
Lucas recorded his first career multi-goal game and his first points of the season with two goals. Furfaro turned in his second multi-point performance of the season with a goal and an assist in the contest.
Shippensburg returns to action Friday in a 6 p.m. contest against UPJ from David See Field.
Note: Prior to the game, the Shippensburg captains and head coach
Jeremy Spering presented a $1,000 check to Bloomsburg in contribution to the Red Card Cancer initiative created in 2009 by Bloomsburg head men's soccer coach Paul Payne.
