Volleyball Splits Saturday, Dropping Kutztown in Four Before Falling to Fairmont

Jill Edwards rips 29 kills combined from the two games; SU hammers season-high 61 kills versus Kutztown

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday from Heiges Field House, winning an important PSAC East clash with Kutztown in four sets before dropping a non-conference nightcap against Fairmont State in straight sets.

Shippensburg (12-6, 3-2 PSAC) received 29 kills on the day from junior Jill Edwards, who moved into third place on the SU career list with 1,233. Her efforts Saturday put her past Kali Antolik '09 (1,213). Edwards is nine kills behind Missy Pierce '06 and 22 kills behind Colleen Toomey '09.

Senior libero Lauren Murphy had 38 digs on Saturday, allowing her to reach fifth on the SU career list with 1,236. Murphy surpassed Toomey and needs 126 more digs to reach fourth place, a slot currently held by Alyssa Kilgore '04.

Senior setter Andrea Heimsoth produced 58 assists and 17 digs.

Saturday was the annual “Dig Pink” day for Shippensburg volleyball, as the Raiders collected donations for the Side-Out Foundation in support of breast cancer awareness. KU wore pink jerseys in its match with Shippensburg.

Shippensburg is back in action at 7 p.m. Monday when it travels to take on Seton Hill. The Raiders will also partake in four PSAC crossovers next weekend before it returns home on Oct. 12 versus East Stroudsburg.

Shippensburg 3, Kutztown 1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-17, 25-18)

The Raiders had a splendid hitting performance against the Golden Bears, ripping a season-high 61 kills and producing a solid .255 hitting percentage. SU hit .314 in its opening set and .318 in the fourth set.

Jill Edwards was marvelous, connecting for 20 kills on a .308 hitting percentage to go along with 16 digs. Senior Rachel Smicker also had a great attacking game, totaling 13 kills and a .360 hitting percentage to go along with three block assists.

Heimsoth played a great match – serving up 39 assists to complement 10 digs, two service aces and three kills. Murphy had 26 digs, one short of a season high.

Senior Jenny Pry nearly had a double-double with nine kills (only one hitting error) and 11 digs. Fellow senior Erin Flick had seven kills, while freshman Taylor Gottshall contributed a solo block and four block assists.

Fairmont State 3, Shippensburg 0 (15-25, 17-25, 17-25)

The visiting Fighting Falcons, fresh off a convincing straight-set win over Kutztown, were maddeningly efficient against the Raiders. Fairmont had just 10 attack errors and hit .316 for the match while limiting the Raiders to a .048 hitting percentage.

Jill Edwards led SU with nine kills and hit .125. Heimsoth had 19 assists, while Murphy had 12 digs. Gottshall had three of the Raiders' 10 block assists.
