SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's volleyball team used an efficient hitting attack, steady passing and 10 service aces to post a convincing straight-set victory over PSAC Eastern Division rival Millersville on Tuesday night from Heiges Field House. Set scores were 25-16, 25-22 and 25-21.
Shippensburg (11-5, 2-2 PSAC) righted itself from a tough Saturday of matches with solid production from its hitters. Senior
Jenny Pry contributed a season-high 10 kills and hit .250 through 28 attempts. She also added five digs.
Junior
Jill Edwards was the most efficient player on the court Tuesday, ripping nine kills without an error en route to a .529 hitting percentage – her highest in her career for a match in which she played in every set. Edwards also provided four digs and two service aces.
Dominating the middle on Tuesday night with a convincing performance was freshman
Taylor Gottshall, who smacked 10 kills to just one error and hit .474 while adding three service aces, three block assists and three digs.
Senior
Andrea Heimsoth chipped in with 25 assists, a season-high four service aces and nine digs. Fellow senior
Lauren Murphy routinely handled the receptions for the Raiders and finished with 11 digs. The Marauders managed just one ace against Shippensburg Tuesday night.
SU held leads of 12-4 and 20-9 in the opening set before racing out to a 7-1 lead at the start of the second set. The Raiders also had a 15-6 lead in the third set before the Marauder got the score within 23-21 late in the frame. Gottshall and Pry had kills to end the match.
The SU volleyball squad held Military Appreciation night on Tuesday, with camouflage t-shirt sales being conducted and the proceeds going toward the Wounded Warrior Project. Representatives from the SU ROTC and the National Guard were also in attendance. Select members of SU's ROTC presented the colors before the national anthem while others served as ballboys.
On Saturday, Shippensburg will host Kutztown at 1 p.m. in a key PSAC Eastern Division match from Heiges Field House. That same evening, SU will entertain Fairmont State in a non-conference regional rematch from earlier this season at 6:30 p.m. from Heiges Field House.
The Raiders are hosting their Dig Pink event on Saturday and encourage fans and supporters to wear pink to the contests.
