SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – First career Raider goals from redshirt-freshman
Aaron Archibald and junior transfer
Patrick Urmson helped propel the Shippensburg University men's soccer team to its first victory of the 2012 season, a 2-1 comeback win over Pittsburgh-Johnstown on Sunday night in the final game of the 2012 Raider Classic from David See Field.
Shippensburg (1-1) dominated throughout the contest, holding advantages in shots (27-6) and corner kicks (12-3). Senior goalkeeper
Clay Sale gave up the first goal of the game 13 minutes in on a fluky play in which he attempted to clear the ball but accidentally hit UPJ's (0-2) Zeke Buchta, who collected the loose ball and tapped in the easy goal.
Clay was solid in goal the rest of the contest, however, as he collected four saves, allowing Shippensburg to mount its comeback that began under a minute before the first half ended. Junior
Casey Bellamy sent a throw-in to the box, where the ball went off the head of a UPJ player before Archibald sent it into the back of the net for the equalizing goal.
After a Pitt-Johnstown foul in the 68th minute, senior
Joe Nixon sent a free kick into the box that found the head of a leaping Urmson and a 2-1 Shippensburg lead. The goal was the second of Urmson's career after playing his first two collegiate seasons at Brevard (N.C.).
Junior
Jonathan DeNicola took seven shots, including three on goal, while sophomore
Fred Lucas sent off five shots. SU had close scoring opportunities throughout the game, but Mountain Cats goalkeeper Tim Ofman made several impressive saves among his nine total for the night.
The Raiders travel to the nation's capital on Wednesday to take on UDC in a 4 p.m. match.
