SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's volleyball team received valuable contributions from all 14 of its active players on Tuesday night from Heiges Field House in a sweep of Davis & Elkins to open the home schedule. Set scores were 25-14, 25-13 and 25-21.
Shippensburg (9-3) had 14 kills each in the first and second sets, hitting .419 in the opening frame and .385 as a squad in the middle stanza. Despite breaking even in the final set, the Raiders swung a successful .271 overall for the match.
Freshmen
Taylor Gottshall and
Faith Athey paced the Raiders with six kills each. Gottshall hit .250 and added a solo block and four block assists, while Athey was efficient with a .364 percentage and made the most of her two sets on the floor.
Seniors
Andrea Heimsoth and
Lauren Murphy were valuable once again in their respective roles. Despite changing personnel around them, Heimsoth chipped in with 27 assists, three blocks, three digs and two aces while Murphy had six digs and was a leader from the back row.
Eleven different Raiders had at least one kill in the match, and no one ended up with a negative hitting percentage. Senior
Rachel Smicker had four kills without an attack error and hit .400 for the match.
Defensively, freshman
Natasha Gibble continued her solid play with six assists, six digs and two aces.
Davis & Elkins (0-9) was done in by its errors, totaling 31 on the attack. Heather Zapf led the Senators with a match-high eight kills and hit .111. Haylee Murray contributed 13 assists.
Tuesday night's match was the first of four this week in which Shippensburg University Athletics teamed up with the Pennsylvania Gift of Life program in an effort to help increase the amount of organ donors. SU Athletics seeks to raise awareness through its initiative while increasing the opportunity to help save lives.
The volleyball team will next be in action this weekend at East Stroudsburg for the first of two crossovers against PSAC Western Division opponents. SU will face Mercyhurst on Friday night before taking on Gannon and Edinboro this Saturday.
