Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Shippensburg University women's volleyball team was vigilant on Friday afternoon in earning a pair of victories at the PSAC/WVIAC crossover tournament hosted by Shepherd, edging Concord in straight sets before rebounding from a tough start against Fairmont State for a five-set win in its nightcap with the Fighting Falcons.

Shippensburg (6-3) defeated the Mountain Lions in three sets, 25-20, 25-23, 25-20. SU dropped its opening set to Fairmont, 6-25, before winning each of the next two sets by 25-21 scores. FSU managed a 27-25 edge in the fourth set but the Raiders closed well to take the fifth and final set, 15-5.

The Raiders were dominant on the block against Fairmont State – totaling 19 (including five solo) in its victory over the Fighting Falcons. Freshman Taylor Gottshall continued to blossom in the middle for the Raiders, recording three solo blocks and an incredible nine block assists in addition to eight kills on just two errors.

Gottshall's 12 total blocks are the most by a SU player during Leanne Piscotty's nine-year run as the Raider head coach. The last SU player to record 12 blocks in a match was Jenn Fuhrman (11 solo, one assist) against Gallaudet on Oct. 21, 2000 in a match held at Edinboro.

Senior Erin Flick continued her efficient play on both matches. Against FSU, Flick contributed 11 kills on four errors along with a solo block and five block assists.

Junior Jill Edwards had 12 kills and 15 digs against Fairmont for another double-double and also pitched in for five block assists. Senior Rachel Smicker had three kills, one solo block and four block assists.

Before Gottshall's nine block assists on Friday, Smicker was the last SU player to have nine block assists in a match. She achieved the feat as a freshman on Sept. 11, 2009 in a match against Stonehill held at Lock Haven.

Senior Andrea Heimsoth delivered 32 assists, 11 digs, two service aces and three block assists. Fellow senior Lauren Murphy had 13 digs and became an integral passer for the Raiders during the match. Freshman Natasha Gibble also added eight digs.

In the opener against Concord, Flick had 10 kills and just one error. Jill Edwards had 10 kills and six digs. Heimsoth contributed 30 assists and seven digs while Murphy also had 13 digs.

Shippensburg will play two more WVIAC opponents tomorrow from Shepherd: Glenville State at 11 a.m. and West Virginia State at 5 p.m.
