The Shippensburg University women's volleyball team opened its season with a pair of impressive victories Friday at the Marauder Clash tournament held at Millersville University, sweeping Holy Family (25-22, 30-28, 25-21) in the afternoon before dispatching Adelphi at night in five sets (25-12, 21-25, 25-19, 22-25 and 15-7).

Shippensburg (2-0) reversed last year's unfortunate trend in five-set matches from the get-go in 2012 by capping off its nightcap against Adelphi – a team that has qualified for the NCAA tournament in each of the last five seasons.

Senior Rachel Smicker was excellent in the middle for the Raiders against the Panthers, recording 11 kills and just one hitting error to go along with three solo blocks and five assists. Smicker formed a wall in the Adelphi match with freshman Taylor Gottshall – who emerged as a force after recording an impressive six solo blocks and seven block assists.

Senior Andrea Heimsoth contributed 41 assists and also had 17 digs. Junior Jill Edwards added 16 kills against Adelphi and finished Friday with 25 kills between the two contests.

In the match against Holy Family, junior Samantha Edwards led the Raiders with 10 kills on just two errors. Senior Erin Flick had nine kills on three errors, while senior Lauren Murphy totaled 20 digs. Heimsoth had 33 assists.

SU was efficient on the attack and had five total blocks against the Tigers, who posted a program-best 25 victories last season that included a defeat of PSAC playoff team Kutztown.

The Raiders will face LIU Post at 9 a.m. tomorrow from the Millersville Student Recreation Center before playing at 11 a.m. against an opponent still to be determined.
