SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's lacrosse team closed out the 2012 season in style on a sunny and pleasant Thursday afternoon and sent out its five seniors with a 17-10 victory over local PSAC rival Millersville from Robb Sports Complex.
Shippensburg (8-9, 4-7 PSAC) opened the game with a five-goal run and led 9-4 at halftime. The Marauders scored three of the first five goals in the second half to get within four goals of the lead but would not get any closer to the Raiders.
Millersville (6-11, 2-9 PSAC) recorded twice as many eight-meter opportunities as the Raiders but scored just once on a free position. Goaltender Lauren Mateja made 12 saves in defeat.
Four Raiders recorded hat tricks in the contest. Freshman
Courtney Kennedy led all players with four goals and also won two draw controls in addition to tallying an assist. Junior
Roxanne Brown had three goals, an assist, a groundball and a draw control.
Junior
Lindsey Kennedy capped off a superlative season with three goals, two assists, six draw controls, four groundballs and three caused turnovers.
Lindsey Kennedy finishes the 2012 season with team highs of 37 goals and 28 assists – the latter of which is one short of the single-season school record (29) set in 2004. She also led the team with 49 draw controls and tied for the team lead with 37 groundball pickups.
The fourth hat trick of the day came from one of the team's five seniors:
Lauren Hauck. She finished a splendid senior season with three goals and two assists on Thursday – bringing her season totals to 29 goals and 25 assists. Hauck's 25 assists ties her for the third-most in single-season school history with former All-American Page Heath.
Sophomore
Kayla Dalzell added two goals and an assist Thursday while sophomore
Bennett Widlake and freshman
Garrie Grenfell also scored goals. Widlake also had three draw controls and two caused turnovers.
The defenders again played well and were also solid on 50-50 balls in the contest. The four starters - sophomore

Sarah Chrencik, junior
Jenna Simmons and senior
Meagan Borgoyn – combined for eight groundball pickups. Borgoyn started 65 of Shippensburg's 67 games in her career.
Senior
Jessica Schubach contributed two assists in her final game and totaled 20 points this season despite being limited to just nine games because of injury.
It was also a capstone performance for seniors
Ali Cross and
Meghan Kearney. Kearney started 55 consecutive games for the Raiders as their goalkeeper before an injury cut her senior season short after just four starts. Cross moved from attack to goaltender this season and finished off with 125 saves, including nine on Thursday, in addition to a .436 save percentage and six victories.
