DRIFTON, Pa. – After achieving a 3-2 victory earlier on Thursday, the Shippensburg University softball team had its tournament run come to end after an 8-0 loss to No. 2 Kutztown that eliminated the Raiders from the 2012 PSAC Softball Championships at ASA of PA Jake Kislan Softball Complex.
After ending the Golden Bears' 33-game winning streak just six days ago, East No. 2 seed Shippensburg (19-26) could only collect two hits in five innings against East No. 1 seed Kutztown and pitcher Mary Kociencki.
The pitching matchup was a rematch of last week's game, but freshman
Makenzie Lynn – who allowed just four hits while pitching into the seventh against KU last Saturday – gave up five runs off seven hits in three and one-third innings on Thursday.
Freshman
Liz Parkins earned the final two outs of the fourth and pitched into the fifth, allowing a three-run home run to Kutztown's Katie Lynch that ended the game by virtue of the mercy rule.
Sophomore
Hilary Lyons and freshman
Tyler Thompson each had singles for the Raiders while senior
Meg Lehman twice drew walks.
Shippensburg concludes the 2012 season with 19 victories. Thompson led the team with a .333 batting average this season while Lyons paced the club with 25 runs scored.
The loss marks the final collegiate contests for four SU seniors: Lehman,
Rochelle Troise,
Emily Parkins and
Chelsea Kendall.
Lehman led the team in her senior season with 26 RBIs and a .990 fielding percentage. She started 117 games in her career, appeared in eight more off the bench, and collected 77 hits during her tenure to go along with 41 RBIs.
Troise started both of Wednesday's games in the outfield and earlier this season collected what was arguably the most memorable hit of her career with a walk-off double versus Edinboro. She appeared in 67 career games.
Parkins was a valuable first baseman and pitcher during her career with the Raiders, throwing 82 innings from the circle and appearing in 72 games in the field. She posted an 8-5 career record as a pitcher.
Kendall had to deal with injuries for much of her senior season but still finishes a memorable Raider run with 273 career innings pitched from the circle. She struck out 229 hitters in her career and won 17 games with Shippensburg.
