SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's lacrosse team honored its five seniors before Saturday afternoon's home clash with No. 15 Gannon but had to weather a lightning delay and frequent downpours in addition to a talented Golden Knight squad that scored 11 first-half tallies en route to a 16-6 win over the Raiders from Robb Sports Complex.
Shippensburg (7-8, 3-7 PSAC) rallied in the first half after falling behind 6-0 early. Freshman
Sheila Johnson, who finished the contest with a career-high four goals, sandwiched tallies from juniors
Roxanne Brown and
Lindsey Kennedy to get the Raiders within two goals.
Following Johnson's second goal at the 10:25 mark, lightning was detected within proximity of the site of competition, which necessitated a 30-minute delay. After play resumed, the Golden Knights erupted for five consecutive goals to break the game open. Johnson scored the last goal of the first half and the first goal of the second half, but the Raiders were held off the scoreboard for the final 25 minutes of the game.
Gannon (10-5, 8-2 PSAC) won 17 of the 24 draw controls in the contest scored all of its tallies on extended runs. In addition to their six-goal run to start the game, the Golden Knights strung together five-goal runs late in the first half and to end the game. Sarah Grzybinski had four goals and five draw controls while Jess Fugate contributed a hat trick and seven draw controls.
Senior
Ali Cross made 10 saves and had two caused turnovers, while sophomore
Liz French was strong on defense and had three caused turnovers. Sophomore
Bennett Widlake was active again with three caused turnovers, three groundball pickups, two groundballs and an assist on the fourth goal of the game.

Meagan Borgoyn, Cross,
Lauren Hauck,
Meghan Kearney and
Jessica Schubach were recognized in a pre-game ceremony.
Borgoyn has started 63 of SU's 64 games over the last four years and calls the defensive backfield her home. She earned All-PSAC Eastern Division Second Team honors after her sophomore season in 2010 when she recorded a season career high 33 groundball pickups and 15 caused turnovers. Overall, Borgoyn has recorded 104 groundball pickups in her career and 34 caused turnovers to go along with 22 draw controls.
Cross, the daughter of Sumner and SU hall of famer Dee Cross, has started in goal for the Raiders for the last 12 games, making 110 saves and posting a 44.7 save percentage. In addition, Cross has been a dependable attacker for the Raiders and excellent on the draw, leading the team with 35 controls as a junior. Between the field and the goal, Cross has totaled 11 goals, seven assists, 59 draw controls and 27 caused turnovers while making 120 saves.
Hauck is one of SU's all-time leaders in assists, having totaled 40 through 65 career games. This season, Hauck has scored a career-high 23 goals and recorded a team-high 21 assists, which is the fifth-most in SU single-season history. She has posted several single-season career highs this season, including 22 groundballs and 14 caused turnovers. Overall, she has scored 55 goals and amassed 95 points in her career.
Kearney started 55 consecutive games for the Raiders as their goalkeeper, beginning with the 2009 season opener and extending into this season. She totaled 467 saves during that span, including a single-season career high of 166 as a sophomore, and posted a save percentage of 44.7 through over 3,100 minutes in goal. In addition to a pair of shutouts, Kearney posted a winning record in her career as SU's goalkeeper, recording 27 victories overall.
Schubach has had a hand in several memorable moments over the last few seasons, including the golden goal in a triple-overtime victory over Seton Hill last season and a six-goal effort a year ago against Mercyhurst. She led the team in assists as a sophomore with 13 in 2010 and recorded three game-winning goals as a junior. Overall, Schubach has scored 54 goals and recorded 20 assists to go along with 30 draw controls and 53 groundball pickups.
SU has been eliminated from playoff contention but still has a chance to pick up victories in its last two games of the season. The Raiders will travel Tuesday for a 4 p.m. matchup at Georgian Court before hosting Millersville and former coach Mia Hall on Thursday at 4 p.m. to conclude the season.
