KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Shippensburg University softball team was unable to overcome the stellar pitching from No. 7-ranked and PSAC East-leading Kutztown on Friday afternoon, dropping both games of a road doubleheader by scores of 7-0 and 9-1.

Sophomore left fielder Hilary Lyons and freshman center fielder Tyler Thompson each went 2-for-5 on the day, while freshman first baseman Maddie Justice drove in Shippensburg's (8-16, 1-4)  lone run of the day with a sacrifice fly in the first inning of Game 2.

Shippensburg will head northwest to play No. 24 Bloomsburg on Sunday in a doubleheader from Jan Hutchinson Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.

Game 1: Kutztown 7, Shippensburg 0

Shippensburg was only able to muster just two hits against Kutztown (28-1, 4-0) sophomore pitcher Samantha Derr, who went the distance and improved her record to 14-0 on the season. Sophomore starting pitcher Emily Estep doubled to center field in the third inning and Lyons singled in the fifth.

Estep pitched the first four innings, giving up eight hits while striking out four.

Game 2: Kutztown 9, Shippensburg 1

The Raiders' bats fared slightly better in the second contest, with Thompson going 2-for-2 with a walk and senior catcher Meg Lehman going 2-for-3 with a double. Lyons added another hit, as did junior right fielder Kiersten Darhower.

SU grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first inning, after Thompson walked to lead-off the game and advanced to second on a passed ball with Lehman at the plate. Thompson then advanced to third on a Lehman single to right field, allowing Justice to drive-in Thompson two batters later with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Freshman Liz Parkins earned the start and went four and one-third innings, giving up nine hits in addition to three strikeouts. Golden Bears pitcher Mary Kociencki continued her impressive freshman campaign, improving her record to 10-0 on the season.
