SALEM, Va. – The Shippensburg University softball team concluded its weekend at the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament in Salem with a tough eight-inning loss on Sunday morning to Fairmont State, 5-2 from the James Moyer Sports Complex. SU finished its Virginia trip with two wins in six games.
Sophomore
Emily Estep pitched seven innings and allowed just two runs on four hits, striking out 11 hitters. Estep's only blemish was a two-run homer in the fourth inning off the bat of FSU third-place hitter Abbey Wilson. In her final inning, Estep struck out four batters – with the first reaching base on a passed ball.
Freshman
Makenzie Lynn pitched the eighth. After a sacrifice bunt, the Fighting Falcons drew a walk and recorded an infield single to load the bases. FSU then used another infield single, a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly to plate three runs. On the sacrifice fly, junior
Kiersten Darhower made an incredible catch as she held on to the ball despite crashing through the right-field fence.
SU trailed 2-1 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, having scored its only run on a fourth-inning solo homer by freshman shortstop
Taylor Weisman – the first of her young career. Needing a run to keep the game going, freshman
Tyler Thompson drew a one-out walk and then stole second base. Thompson advanced to third base on a groundout and then scored on a passed ball.
The Raiders threatened in the bottom of the eighth – with Weisman starting out on second base and freshman
Maddie Justice drawing a walk to start the frame. After a groundout and a strikeout, sophomore
Hilary Lyons walked to load the bases. However, Fairmont pitcher Chelsea Cobb struck out the final hitter to end the game.
Shippensburg will return to action Friday afternoon when it begins PSAC Eastern Division play from East Stroudsburg at 2:30 p.m. in a doubleheader from Zimbar Field.
