SALEM, Va. – The Shippensburg University softball team exploded for 10 runs in its third and final game on Saturday evening to cap off a two-victory effort on the second day of the annual West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament from James Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Va.
The Raiders (7-12) dropped the first game of the afternoon, a 2-1 loss to Shepherd, before beating Davis & Elkins and Glenville State by scores of 3-0 and 10-2, respectively.
Sophomore
Rachel Shumway continued her weekend tear, going 6-for-7 with three walks and knocking in four runs on the day. The second baseman hit an eventual game-winning three-run home run in the first inning against Davis & Elkins that proved to be the game's only runs.
Freshman center fielder
Tyler Thompson also lit a spark for the Raiders' offense, going 3-for-9 with an RBI, a run and two stolen bases over the three contests.
Against Davis & Elkins, freshman
Maddie Justice earned her first victory of the season in her first start of the season after pitching four and one-third innings of scoreless ball with four strikeouts.
Senior
Chelsea Kendall pitched the final two and two-thirds innings against the Senators, striking out five en route to her first save of the season.
Freshman
Liz Parkins made two appearances from the circle on the day, including a six-inning, seven-strikeout complete game victory in her start against Glenville State.
The Raiders will square off with Fairmont State tomorrow at 9 a.m. in the team's final game of the weekend.
Shepherd 2, Shippensburg 1
The Raiders got on the board in the third inning, when Thompson bunt singled and stole second with one out. Senior catcher
Meg Lehman then singled up the middle to send Thompson home for a 1-0 SU lead.
The lead held until the next inning, when the Rams led off with a solo home run to straightaway center field. Shepherd followed up in the fifth inning with another run off a single to right field.
Liz Parkins then relieved freshman starter
Makenzie Lynn, who gave up four hits and two earned runs in four and two-thirds innings to go along with five strikeouts.
Liz Parkins fanned three and held Shepherd hitless in the final one and one-third innings of play.
After two quick outs in the sixth inning, Shippensburg managed to get two runners on base for a potential game-changing rally. Justice singled to right center and Shumway singled down the left field line in the next at-bat before
Liz Parkins grounded into a fielder's choice that got Shumway out at second base.
Shippensburg 3, Davis & Elkins 0
In the first inning, Lehman – who got on base with a walk – advanced to third when Justice got to first thanks to a fielder's choice. With two outs, Shumway then followed with her second home run in as many days, a three-run trotter to left field.
The Shippensburg bats would cool off for the remainder of the contest, as Senators pitcher Alanna Jones held SU hitless for the final four innings.
Shippensburg 10, Glenville State 2
The Raiders scored three, one and six runs in the final three innings, respectively, to end the game in the bottom of the sixth by virtue of the eight-run mercy rule. The victory avenged a 10-5 loss on Feb. 25 to the Pioneers at the Catawba College Invitational from Salisbury, N.C.
Liz Parkins got off to a rough start in the first inning, giving up four singles for two earned runs in the frame. The third single, which scored the first run, was hit directly to the circle, bounced up off the dirt and ricocheted off
Liz Parkins' face. The right-hander remained in the game, however, giving up just three hits in the final five innings.
After totaling just one hit in the first three innings, the SU offense finally exploded beginning in the fourth frame with a home run and three consecutive doubles.
After a groundout and a pop-up to start the inning, Justice hit a solo shot to left field, her second round-tripper of the season. Shumway followed with a double to right center and freshman designated player
Amber Millison drove Shumway home with another double through the left side. Thompson then doubled to left center, driving in Millison for a 3-2 Shippensburg lead.
Junior right fielder
Kiersten Darhower led off the next inning with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout before Weisman brought her home with an infield single.
With a 4-2 lead going into the sixth, the Raiders offense cranked up the heat by totaling eight hits and six runs in the final frame.
Shumway led off with a single, and her pinch-runner, freshman
Jess Harding, advanced to second on a groundout and to third on a bunt single from Thompson. Thompson then swiped second before junior third baseman
Jenn Deardorff reached first on an infield single.
Darhower drove Harding home with a single before sophomore left fielder
Hilary Lyons singled to right field – and advanced to second on the throw home – driving in both Thompson and Deardorff's pinch runner, senior
Rochelle Troise, for a 7-2 lead.
A Lehman groundout brought home Darhower before a Weisman single through the right side plated Lyons. Justice followed with another single up the middle, setting the stage for Shumway to drive in one final run to give the Raiders a game-ending eight-run advantage.
The second baseman finished off the rally by singling up the middle and scoring Weisman for the final run of SU's 10-2 mercy-rule victory.
Shippensburg finished with more runs (10) against Glenville State than it had in its first four games combined (seven) from Salem.
