KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Shippensburg University softball team dropped two contests on a sunny Wednesday from the Rebel Spring Games in Florida, falling 7-4 to Minnesota-Duluth and 6-2 to Adelphi. SU played a total of seven games during its Florida trip.
Senior catcher
Meg Lehman went 3-for-7 on Wednesday with three RBIs and a run scored. Lehman finished the Florida trip with six hits in seven games and a team-high seven RBIs.
Freshman outfielder
Tyler Thompson was 2-for-2 with two walks, two runs and three stolen bases against Adelphi. Junior outfielder
Kiersten Darhower had two hits and scored a run against Minnesota-Duluth.
Shippensburg will fly into BWI Airport on Thursday and catch a bus that will transport them to Salem, Virginia for the annual West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament. SU will play six games over the course of three days this weekend – including a recently added contest at 3 p.m. Saturday against Davis & Elkins.
Minnesota-Duluth 7, Shippensburg 4
The Raiders raced out to a 4-0 lead after an inning and a half with a pair of runs in the first two frames.
In the first, Thompson reached first base after a ground ball went through the legs of the second baseman. Lehman then hit a clean single into left field and went to second base after a fielding error. Freshman
Maddie Justice hit a sacrifice fly into center field to plate Thompson, and two batters later, freshman third baseman
Jessie Trammell contributed an infield hit to shortstop that scored Lehman.
SU loaded the bases with one out in the second inning on a hit by pitch, bunt single and a fielding error on a fielder's choice. Lehman singled in sophomore outfielder
Hilary Lyons and Darhower with a hit through the right side.
Minnesota-Duluth (12-9) rallied for seven unanswered runs over the course of the next three innings – taking advantage of five Shippensburg errors to take control. The Bulldogs only had one extra-base hit in the game but plated three in the second, one in the third and three in the fourth.
Freshman
Makenzie Lynn was tagged for all seven runs – only three of which were earned – over 3.1 innings of work. Lynn recorded three strikeouts. Fellow freshman Lizzy Parkins did not allow a hit over the final 2.2 innings – walking two and striking out three.
Adelphi 6, Shippensburg 2
The Raiders fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first after a leadoff walk, a fielding error, a sacrifice fly and a fielder's choice on a bunt. SU got one run back in the bottom of the frame after Thompson led off with an infield single, stole second base, advance to third on a fly out and scored on a clean single to right field by Justice.
Shippensburg tied it in the bottom of the third with another trip around the bases by Thompson. With one out, Thompson walked and then stole second. Lehman then singled home Thompson with a hit into the center-field gap.
Senior
Chelsea Kendall allowed just two earned runs through the first six innings before running into trouble in the seventh. She totaled seven strikeouts. Justice over from first base and finished the game in the circle, striking out two of the three batters she faced.
