SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team split a Sunday doubleheader with Gannon from Fairchild Field, finishing the weekend by taking three out of four in the two-day home series against the Golden Knights. The Raiders (11-6) won Game 1 by a score of 5-2 before losing 3-1 in Game 2 for their first and only loss of the weekend.
Junior
Tom Bush earned the start in Game 1 and claimed his first victory of the season while giving up four hits and two earned runs and fanning four in four innings.
Sophomores
Shawn Patterson and
Austin Bartley each pitched an inning of relief before senior
Kody Kibler got out of a jam after allowing two men on in the seventh and struck out two to earn his first save of the season.
In Game 2, sophomore
Pat Kregeloh threw a complete-game effort in his first start on the mound this season. The right-hander struck out four and scattered six hits and an unearned run in the loss. Kregeloh left a Gannon (8-8) base runner stranded on third base in each of the first two innings.
SU will travel to Greenville, Tenn. over spring break for a pair of games at Tusculum. The Raiders and Pioneers will play at 4 p.m. on Tues., March 13 and 1 p.m. on Wed., March 14.
Game 1: Shippensburg 5, Gannon 2
All seven of the game's runs were scored in the first inning, as Gannon jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with two hits, a walk and a stolen base in the first frame.
The SU offense didn't allow the deficit to last long, however, as the Raiders exploded for six hits and five runs in the second inning before knocking out Gannon's starting pitcher after just 0.2 innings of work.
Senior shortstop
Ben Miller and freshman second baseman
Jimmy Spanos led off the frame with singles. After junior right fielder
Cody Kulp reached on a fielder's choice, junior left fielder
Simon Beloff cranked a two-RBI double to right center that scored
Ben Miller and Kulp and tied the game at 2.
Junior
Tyler Shover then knocked in Beloff with a single up the middle. Shover scored two batters later on a balk with junior third baseman
Tyler Basso at the plate. Basso singled and stole second while at the plate was Kregeloh, who knocked in Basso for the game's final run with an RBI double to left center.
Game 2: Gannon 3, Shippensburg 1
Neither team could muster up any scoring threats throughout the first four innings, but Gannon took advantage in the top of the fifth when with the bases loaded, it scored three runs with a sacrifice fly followed by an SU throwing error.
The Raiders were held hitless for the first five innings by Gannon hurler Matt Tobin. Spanos broke up the no-hit bid, however, with a single to lead off the sixth inning before advancing to second base on a throwing error from the shortstop. Beloff grounded out two batters later to move Spanos to third, where he then scored thanks to an RBI single from senior designated hitter
Jimmy Miller.
Ben Miller finished the game with four walks in four plate appearances while the Raiders accounted for just two hits off Tobin in six innings despite striking out just once.
