Box Score
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's soccer team scored three times in the second half of its Tuesday evening PSAC matchup with East Stroudsburg to cement its first conference victory of the season, a 4-1 win over the Warriors from David See Field.
Shippensburg (3-6-2, 1-3-1 PSAC) led 1-0 at halftime after a pretty passing play in the 35th minute resulted in the game's opening goal. Junior
Oli Templeton sent a pass up the right side to senior
Ben Weihbrecht. After one touch, Weihbrecht bent a marvelous cross onto the foot of a streaking junior
Jonathan DeNicola, whose finish from the middle of the box resulted in his fourth goal of the season.
East Stroudsburg (3-8-1, 0-4-1) was able to answer in the 60th minute after a Shippensburg foul in the box resulted in a penalty kick. Nick Fischer converted the opportunity to tie the score at 1-1.
Senior
Sam Talbot answered just two minutes later. After a long stoppage, Templeton quickly restarted play and sent a free kick on goal that was saved by ESU keeper Callum Hampson, but the rebound slipped away and over to Talbot, who slammed the loose ball into the goal to give SU a 2-1 lead.
Tuesday's game was not overly physical but was lacking in flow as a result of frequent stoppages for injuries and yellow cards (the teams combined for eight in the match). The momentum settled onto Shippensburg's side beginning in the 64th minute, however, as a Warrior player was sent off for his second yellow card – allowing the Raiders to play a man up for the rest of the contest.
Talbot put some English on a free kick to give SU a 3-1 advantage in the 82nd minute. It was his second goal of the game and the fifth of the season. Freshman
Derek Adams added a nifty goal less than four minutes later with a solid finish of another splendid Templeton feed.
Senior
Andrew Foran picked up the win in goal, making two saves. Hampson made six saves for East Stroudsburg.
SU finished with a 19-13 advantage in shots and an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Raiders return to action at 2 p.m. Saturday with a PSAC match at Bloomsburg.
