After a sweep at the hands of Clarion on Saturday morning, the Shippensburg University women's volleyball team rebounded in Game 2 and snapped a 16-match losing streak to California (Pa.) with a four-set victory in road PSAC crossover action from Clarion. Set scores were 18-25, 23-25 and 15-25 against the Golden Eagles and 25-18, 27-25, 13-25 and 25-22 against the Vulcans.
The Raiders' (16-7, 6-3 PSAC) losing skid to California (18-4, 7-2) dated back 13 seasons to 1999, with Shippensburg's last victory before Saturday coming on Sept. 27, 1996 in four sets (the two teams did not play in 1997 or 1998). The victory is just the sixth over Cal dating back to the inception of the SU women's volleyball program in 1980.
Junior
Jill Edwards led Shippensburg on the day with 26 kills, 21 digs, six block assists and five service aces. Freshman
Taylor Gottshall finished with 22 kills and just five errors to go along with six block assists. Freshman
Faith Athey was stellar as a blocker, finishing with 12 block assists on the day.
The Raiders return home next weekend for three matches: against East Stroudsburg at 7 p.m. on Friday before hosting Lock Haven at 1 p.m. and Chowan at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Clarion 3, Shippensburg 0 (18-25, 23-25, 15-25)
The Raiders struggled against the consistent attack of Clarion's Carlie Bieranowski (18 kills), Emily Stewart (11) and Rebecca Webb (10).
Gottshall led SU with nine kills and just two errors with a hitting percentage of .412. No Raider managed to get into double figures in digs. Senior
Andrea Heimsoth accounted for 19 assists while she, Gottshall and Athey all had three block assists.
Gottshall also managed nine kills on two errors, while
Jill Edwards had six kills and seven digs.
Shippensburg 3, California (Pa.) 1 (25-18, 27-25, 13-25, 25-22)
Jill Edwards filled up the stat sheet, posting 20 kills with five errors in addition to 14 digs, four block assists and three service aces. Heimsoth accumulated 43 assists and 14 digs while Gottshall was again efficient, unleashing 13 kills with just three errors.
Athey totaled nine block assists in addition to six kills while freshman
Cristen Harris had eight kills and 10 digs with three block assists.
