Volleyball Bests Host Slippery Rock and IUP in First Day of Weekend PSAC Crossover Play

Edwards totals 34 kills and 26 digs, Smicker adds 16 kills with just one error and Athey totals 14 blocks

The Shippensburg University women's volleyball team defeated Slippery Rock in four sets before winning a back-and-forth- five-setter against Indiana (Pa.) on Friday at Slippery Rock during the first of two days of road PSAC crossover action this weekend. Set scores were 21-25, 26-24, 25-19 and 25-19 vs. the Rock and 25-11, 23-25, 25-16, 21-25 and 15-12 vs. the Crimson Hawks.

Junior Jill Edwards finished the day with 34 kills (17 in each match) and 26 digs. Senior Rachel Smicker had 16 total kills with just one hitting error on the day as well as 10 total blocks.

Freshman Faith Athey made her presence felt on the block, leading the team with seven total blocks in each match. Against IUP, Athey accounted for 11 kills, just two errors and a team-high .429 hitting percentage.

Freshman Cristen Harris totaled 20 kills and 29 digs, while freshman Taylor Gottshall had 21 kills and five block assists. Senior Andrea Heimsoth posted 44 and 47 assists along with 32 total digs. Senior Lauren Murphy finished with 38 digs.

The Raiders travel to Clarion tomorrow to take on the Golden Eagles at 10 a.m. and California (Pa.) at 3:30 p.m.

Shippensburg 3, Slippery Rock 1 (21-25, 26-24, 25-19, 25-19)

The Raiders fell behind early in the first set, 6-1, and tied it up at 15 before the Rock eventually won, 25-21. Shippensburg then rattled off three straight victories – including a close 26-24 decision in the second set before a pair of convincing 25-19 wins – to claim the match.

Harris had a career-high 13 kills to go along with 11 digs for the first double-double of her young career. Jill Edwards also posted a double-double with 17 kills and 15 digs in addition to four service aces. Gotshall had 10 kills, Murphy had a team-high 18 digs and Heimsoth posted 44 assists to go along with 13 digs.

Smicker sent home nine kills with a team-high .471 hitting percentage as well as six block assists. Athey led SU with seven total blocks.

Shippensburg 3, Indiana (Pa.) 2 (25-11, 23-25, 25-16, 21-25, 15-12)

The Raiders and Crimson Hawks alternated sets before Shippensburg rallied in the fifth set for the victory. Jill Edwards again had 17 kills, this time with 11 digs. Gotshall and Athey each posted 11 kills, with Athey hitting at a team-high .429 clip to go along with seven total blocks (including three solo).

Heimsoth accounted for 47 assists and 19 digs, Murphy had 20 digs and Harris had 18. Harris and Smicker each swatted seven kills, with Smicker accounting for zero errors and a .333 hitting percentage.
