SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Jill Edwards became Shippensburg University's school record holder for career kills on Saturday as the Shippensburg University women's volleyball team split a pair of matches from Heiges Field House, dropping a four-setter in the afternoon to Lock Haven before rebounding at night with a four-set win over Chowan.
Set scores of the Lock Haven match were 23-25, 21-25, 26-24 and 17-25. Set scores of the Chowan match were 25-16, 25-12, 22-25 and 25-18.
Edwards, through 93 career matches, has totaled 1,339 kills and posted an impressive .218 hitting percentage over the course of 3,858 attempts. She has 314 kills this season, including 23 that were tallied on Saturday.
Shippensburg (18-8, 7-4 PSAC) sits in second place in the PSAC Eastern Division after Saturday's decision, one game behind the Bald Eagles. Lock Haven improved to 13-9, 8-3 PSAC while Chowan fell to 13-6.
SU's next match is at 7 p.m. Tuesday from Wheeling Jesuit. The Cardinals, 21-2 overall, are four-time defending WVIAC Tournament champions and ranked No. 17 in the AVCA preseason coaches poll.
Lock Haven 3, Shippensburg 1

Faith Athey produced worthy hitting performances against the Bald Eagles as the Raiders totaled 56 kills and hit .227 as a team. Edwards had 14 kills and hit .208 to complement 11 digs. Athey had 14 kills on just two errors and a .444 hitting percentage.
Senior
Jenny Pry was strong off the bench with 13 kills and a .233 hitting percentage. Fellow senior
Andrea Heimsoth had 45 assists, 13 digs and three kills.
Lock Haven boasted a potent attack in Saturday's match, hitting .294 as a squad and committing just 14 attack errors. Gao Xuan led all players with 21 kills, while Bailey Farthing added 14 from the middle. Alexa Garrity had 47 assists and Erin Walsh contributed 22 digs.
Shippensburg 3, Chowan 1
Edwards reached her record early in the match, finishing with nine kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Senior
Erin Flick was also impressive with eight kills, no errors and a .571 hitting percentage.
Athey had seven kills but was also solid at the net, totaling one solo block and four block assists. Junior
Samantha Edwards (Damascus, Md./Damascus) impressed with seven kills and four block assists. Heimsoth delivered 24 assists, nine digs and two kills.
Freshman
Taylor Gottshall had five kills without an error and three block assists. Fellow freshman
Natasha Gibble earned extended playing time and had 15 assists.
Ten different Raiders had at least one kill.
