Box Score
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's soccer team overcame a sluggish start on Sunday from David See Field by scoring three consecutive goals and staving off a late Goldey-Beacom rally in a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over the Lightning.
Shippensburg (1-1) got a spark from some of its reserves late in the first half. Sophomore
Alex Prosserhad several solid runs up the right side of the field and converted one into a tally – feeding sophomore
Andrew Collier in the 43rd minute for a splendid header that tied the score at 1-1.
Junior
Logan Henke gave Shippensburg the lead in the 59th minute after capitalizing on a loose ball in the box. A crossing pass dipped low into the net and ricocheted off the outstretched goaltender's hands, caroming back to Henke, who fired a low missile into the net for his second career goal and his first at home.
Freshman starter
Fred Lucas, who led the Raiders on Sunday with five shots, made it 3-1 in the 70th minute with a run down the right side that ended with a safe finish past the keeper.
Goldey-Beacom (0-2) made the most of its chances, scoring on its only two shots in the contest. The Lightning opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Juan Perez won a one-on-one matchup with junior tri-captain
Austin Hill and fired a shot that deflected past junior goaltender
Clay Sale.
In the 86th minute, Goldey-Beacom senior Rob Cann finished off a pretty passing play to bring the Lightning within one. Juan Perez and Andre Jank had the helpers on the tally with one-touch passes that preceded the Cann strike.
SU had a 30-2 advantage in shots and forced Lightning keeper Ignacio Farias to make nine saves. The Raiders also had a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks and controlled the territorial edge in the second half.
Shippensburg is scheduled to return to action at 2 p.m. Wednesday from Concord.
