Volleyball Splits Saturday WVIAC Crossovers, Edging D&E Before Falling to Fairmont State

SU beats Senators in straight sets; drops five-set heartbreaker to Fighting Falcons

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – The Shippensburg University volleyball team splits its matches Saturday at the PSAC/WVIAC crossover, earning a morning victory over Davis & Elkins by scores of 25-20, 25-14 and 25-21 before enduring a seven-plus hour wait and dropping a heartbreaking five-setter to Fairmont State by scores of 23-25, 25-22, 25-22, 21-25 and 14-16.

Shippensburg (3-5) faced the Senators at 9 a.m. from the Butcher Athletic Center and earned a quick victory. The second match of the day did not begin until after 6 p.m.

Sophomore Jill Edwards added 40 more kills to her total between the two games and hit .241 for the day. Senior Libby Woffindin hit .255 and totaled 23 kills.

Shippensburg will open its home slate at 7 p.m. Tuesday from Heiges Field House against Seton Hill.

Shippensburg 3, Davis & Elkins 0

Libby Woffindin and Jill Edwards each paced the attack with 11 kills. Edwards had nine digs while Woffindin chipped in with three blocks and two service aces. Junior Erin Flick had four kills to just one error and provided two solo blocks.

Junior Andrea Heimsoth continued her solid work as the primary setter with 33 assists, seven digs, one service ace and one block assist. Defensively, junior Lauren Murphy contributed a team-high 16 digs.

Fairmont State 3, Shippensburg 2

Jill Edwards came one short of her career high with 29 kills in the nightcap against the Fighting Falcons.  She hit .275 for the match and had nine digs. Murphy had an excellent passing performance for Shippensburg and once again led the team with 25 digs.

Junior Rachel Smicker had a strong match with eight kills while hitting .192. She contributed two solo blocks while Flick had four kills, four digs and three solo blocks. Heimsoth had a whopping 57 assists – a season-high – and finished the weekend with a total of 150 through four matches.

SU's demise in the nightcap was its errors – 32 on attacks and eight on services. The Raiders totaled 63 kills and had 13 total blocks.
