Lindsey Kennedy scored a game-high four goals and seniors
Katie Brewer and
Karen Schnurr capped off their collegiate careers with hat tricks as the Shippensburg University women's lacrosse team concluded the 2011 regular season with a 15-9 victory over Millersville.
Shippensburg (8-8) held an 8-4 lead at halftime and scored the final three goals of the contest to clinch its fourth conference victory of the season. Junior
Meghan Kearney helped the Raider's offensive output stand up with 14 saves – she finished the season with 162 saves in 16 games.
Kennedy had four goals – three of which came in the second half – and dished out two assists. She finishes her sophomore season ranked third on the squad with 32 goals and led the team with 16 assists. Kennedy tied for the team lead with 12 caused turnovers, ranked second with 32 draw controls and picked up 34 groundballs this season.
Schnurr finished as the team's leading goal scorer with 37 this season – 15 more than she totaled in any of her previous three seasons. She had a hat trick in half of the team's games this season and was held off the scoresheet just three times in 2011. Schnurr finished her Raider career with 84 goals (four game-winners), 10 assists, 80 draw controls, and 73 groundball pickups in 64 career games.
Brewer was right behind Schnurr this season with 34 goals – she also added seven assists and had seven hat tricks. It was the second straight 30-goal season for Brewer, who finished her career with 79 goals in 48 games. Brewer also amassed 18 assists and 35 draw controls in her career.
Freshman
Amanda Krok, who entered Thursday's game having scored just one goal in nine games this season, finished with a hat trick. Krok scored SU's last goal of the first half and also tallied the last goal of the season with 2:14 left in the contest.
Juniors
Lauren Hauck and
Jessica Schubach also scored in the victory for Shippensburg. Schubach tallied an impressive seven draw controls in the contest and finished the season with 26 goals. Hauck had 12 goals in 2011 and finished the season with 14 assists.
Freshman
Liz French led all field players with 36 groundball pickups this season – she added one more in Thursday's season finale and won two draw controls. Junior
Meagan Borgoyn capped off another solid season with four groundballs and two caused turnovers in Thursday's game.
It was a touching conclusion to the regular season for the two teams as it marked the final game in the 33-year career of retiring Millersville head coach Barb Waltman. Shippensburg is coached by Mia Gambino Hall, who played four years under Waltman and graduated from Millersville in 2007.
