MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – A pair of freshmen came up big for the Shippensburg University baseball team on Sunday afternoon as the Raiders split their doubleheader with No. 20/No. 9 Millersville. SU dropped the opener 5-0 before rebounding with a 3-1 victory in Game 2.
Shippensburg (15-21, 8-8 PSAC East) got three hits in Sunday's doubleheader from third baseman
Pat Kregeloh – the biggest being a two-run homer in the sixth inning of the second game that put the Raiders up 3-0. Kregeloh was SU's leading hitter this week, batting .313 in 16 at-bats (five games) with his first two round trippers of the season.
Freshman
Shawn Patterson took to the rubber in Game 2 and was excellent in his first divisional start. Patterson came within one strike of a one-hit shutout – walking two and striking out four while throwing 105 pitches. In three starts this season, Patterson has allowed just three earned runs in 16.2 innings with 12 strikeouts.
Millersville (28-8, 15-5 PSAC East) won the opener with a five-hit shutout by Mike McMonagle, who leads the Marauders with a 2.15 earned-run average.
Down to their last strike and trailing by three runs in Game 2, the Marauders produced three straight hits and ultimately loaded the bases with a fielder's choice before SU junior
Kody Kibler picked up his third save of the season by inducing a groundout.
Senior designated hitter
Jesse Smith was the other SU player with a hit in both games. He also swiped second in each contest and now leads the club with 10 stolen bases.
Junior
Ted Williams took the loss in the opening game, allowing five earned runs in five innings while striking out four hitters. Fellow junior
Eric Herman reached base three times in the doubleheader with a single, walk and hit by pitch.
Tomorrow, Shippensburg will host its re-scheduled doubleheader with Slippery Rock at 1:30 p.m. from Fairchild Field.
