GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Shippensburg University lacrosse team put forth an outstanding effort against the No. 4 team in the country on Monday afternoon but dropped an 11-7 decision to the Saints of Limestone College.
Shippensburg (1-1) was paced offensively by sophomore
Lindsey Kennedy, who scored a career-high five goals on just seven shots. Kennedy also picked up three groundballs and had three caused turnovers.
Through two games this season, the All-PSAC Second Teamer leads the team with eight goals, two assists and four caused turnovers.
Senior
Karen Schnurr maintained her offensive pace with a pair of goals, bringing her season total to six. Junior
Ali Cross and freshman
Bennett Widlake provided assists.
SU started its attack early, earning a 2-1lead in the first three minutes of the game with goals by Schnurr and Kennedy. Limestone scored four unanswered goals before Kennedy stopped the rally with a goal. Her third tally of the half came with 6:52 remaining before intermission.
Limestone (5-0) held a 7-4 lead at halftime and extended that advantage with the first two goals of the second half. Trailing 10-5 with eight minutes remaining, Kennedy scored off an assist from Widlake and Schnurr scored on a free-position attempt to bring SU within three goals.
Last year, Limestone came up to Shippensburg and cruised to an 18-4 victory. This year's contest was a battle on a grass surface – with the Raiders matching the Saints during the first half in shots (11) and draw controls (six). The turnover differential was just one and the groundball margin was just four – both in favor of the hosts.
Junior
Meghan Kearney made nine saves in the contest and picked up a groundball.
Shippensburg returns to action March 15 at IUP.
