SALISBURY, N.C. – The Shippensburg University softball team continued its success at the plate on Friday by scoring 14 runs in a doubleheader sweep at the Catawba College Invitational. SU defeated Catawba, 8-6, and also beat Winston-Salem State, 6-3.
Shippensburg (5-1) rallied in the opener after allowing four runs in the first inning. Junior
Chelsea Kendall survived a rough start to throw a complete game, allowing one earned run in the final six innings while finishing the game with eight strikeouts.
Tied 6-6 entering the top of the seventh inning, senior
Dana Ward opened the frame and was brought home in the next at-bat with a two-run homer by senior
Moira Johnsen. Both ladies went 3-for-4 in the contest, with Ward scoring three times.

Courtney Steele laced an RBI-double while freshman
Emily Estep and junior
Meg Lehman contributed RBI-singles. SU got two more runs in the fifth with an RBI-single by Steele and an RBI-groundout by Estep.
Against Winston-Salem State, Ward pitched the first five innings. With the scored tied 3-3 in the top of the sixth, SU scored three runs to take control. Estep pitched the final two innings to earn the save. Among the run producers was senior
Hope Cornell, who slugged a solo home run.
On Saturday, Shippensburg will face Lenoir-Rhyne at 2 p.m. and Glenville State at 4 p.m.
