MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Shippensburg University softball team earned a split of its Sunday afternoon doubleheader with Chowan, dropping the opener 3-2 before rebounding to win the nightcap 6-2. Freshman
Emily Estep earned the victory from the circle in the nightcap.
Shippensburg (3-1) scored six runs with two outs in the second inning of the nightcap and used that momentum to salvage the split. The rally began with a single by sophomore
Jenna Allen, a walk by senior
Jill Mullan and an infield hit by senior
Dana Ward.
Senior
Moira Johnsen continued her success this weekend with a single to right-center field that scored Allen and Mullan. Senior
Hope Cornell followed with an RBI-single to left-center field and senior
Courtney Steele capped off the streak with a two-run double. Steele also delivered an RBI-single in the first inning.
Estep threw a complete game, allowing just one earned run in seven innings while striking out nine batters.
SU had a 2-0 lead in the opener but could not hold on for the win. Junior
Chelsea Kendall pitched a complete game, allowing three runs in six innings while striking out five batters.
Next weekend, Shippensburg will compete in the Catawba College tournament in North Carolina.
