SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University volleyball team opened its PSAC crossover weekend with an impressive straight-set victory over the Crimson Hawks of IUP before dropping another tough five-set match in its nightcap, this time to the Vulcans of California (Pa.).
Shippensburg (5-14, 2-7 PSAC) ripped 50 kills in an impressive attack against the Crimson Hawks. Set scores were 25-13, 25-15 and 25-18. SU received a banner performance from junior
Erin Flick that included a career-high 16 kills and a .483 hitting percentage. Senior
Libby Woffindin added 10 kills as no Shippensburg player finished with a negative hitting percentage for the match.
Sophomore
Jill Edwards had nine kills and junior
Jenny Pry was especially efficient with eight kills to just one error on 15 total attempts. Junior
Lauren Murphy returned at libero and recorded 14 digs.
In the nightcap, SU took a two-set lead before the Vulcans completed their comeback. The match marked the fourth time this season that Raiders could not preserve a 2-0 lead against a PSAC opponent.
Edwards contributed a double-double with a team-high 17 kills in addition to 16 digs. Woffindin and Pry each had 10 kills – with Woffindin totaling three solo blocks and three block assists. Murphy led the Raiders with 21 digs.
Junior
Andrea Heimsoth had five kills and hit .500 from the floor in addition to totaling 40 assists and 10 digs.
California (17-3, 8-1 PSAC) hit just .068 in the first set and was negative hitting team from the floor in the second set before rebounding with 39 kills over the final three frames. Bridget Bielich was a consistent attacking force off the bench for the Vulcans with a game-high 19 kills while Meghan Franz totaled 10 blocks.
Shippensburg returns to action tomorrow from Heiges Field House with a 10 a.m. matchup against Clarion and a 6 p.m. contest versus Slippery Rock.
