SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 2 Shippensburg University field hockey team recorded a 9-6 advantage in penalty corners in Monday night's PSAC Championship game against No. 1 Bloomsburg but could only turn one of those chances into a goal, as the Huskies scored twice in a 69-second span of the first half and outlasted the Raiders, 3-1, from a chilly Robb Sports Complex.
Shippensburg (17-3) had not allowed a shot on goal for the first 18 minutes of the contest until the Huskies earned their first penalty corner. BU converted its first scoring chance when PSAC championship game MVP Amanda Riley re-directed an entry feed from outside the scoring arc sent in by Jaclyn Beasley, putting the Huskies up 1-0.
Bloomsburg (18-0) got another penalty corner exactly one minute after its goal and scored nine seconds later, when Brittany Matthews sent the rebound of a Riley shot into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.
SU settled down after surviving a third penalty corner and switching goaltenders shortly after the second goal. SU tilted the momentum in the final seven minutes of the half, recording five penalty corners in that stretch before intermission. On an untimed penalty corner before halftime, junior
Taylor Jones made the score 2-1 after firing home a pass from junior
Ashley Taylor.
The Raiders came out of the gates quickly in the second half and drew two penalty corners in the first five minutes but did not record a shot on either opportunity. Senior
Kristina Taylor created several scoring chances with her speed by racing up the field and using her stick skills to draw fouls against the defenders. However, SU simply could not get good looks inside the scoring circle and BU goaltender Meghan Hollenbach was staunch with five saves.
The Huskies gained control with 20 minutes to play when Riley scored her second goal of the game at 50:27 off an assist from Amber Aulenbach. Bloomsburg played tight to the vest for the remainder of the game and did not record another shot while limiting the Raiders to just three shots on goal down the stretch.
