WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The Shippensburg University volleyball team split a pair of contests in Connecticut on Saturday afternoon, beating Stonehill in straight sets before dropping a 3-1 decision to host New Haven. Set scores versus the Skyhawks were 25-14, 25-19, 25-20. Set scores versus the Chargers were 21-25, 25-23, 22-25, 19-25.
The Raiders (13-19) host Shepherd at 7 p.m. Wednesday night in SU's home finale. Seniors
Lauren Bauer and
Libby Woffindin will be honored before the match.
Shippensburg, currently in fourth place in the PSAC East standings, will wrap up the regular season next weekend with matches at East Stroudsburg and Lock Haven. The top four teams in each PSAC division qualify for the conference playoffs that begin Nov. 8.
Shippensburg 3, Stonehill 0
Sophomore
Jill Edwards had 17 kills in the match, and now has 518 on the season – a new SU single-season record moving her past Jenn Fuhrman's 489 in 2000. Edwards had 458 kills as a freshman in 2010, and with 976 for her career, is in sixth place on the school's all-time list.
Woffindin had four service aces for the Raiders, while juniors
Lauren Murphy and
Andrea Heimsoth posted 10 and nine digs, respectively. Woffindin also had five block assists, while
Jill Edwards finished with four.
New Haven 3, Shippensburg 1
Jill Edwards finished the match with 19 kills and a .348 hitting percentage to go along with six digs. Woffindin had 12 kills while Murphy led the Raiders defensively with 19 digs. Heimsoth had 44 assists, while she, Woffindin and junior
Erin Flick each posted two service aces.
