EDINBORO, Pa. – Junior
Sean Minford satisfied the PSAC qualifying standards in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke on Saturday afternoon, winning both events and helping guide the Shippensburg University men's swimming team to a 110-94 dual meet victory over Edinboro.
“I have never been more proud of a team at this point in the season after a dual meet situation than I am with this group,” head coach
Tim Verge said following the meet. “They fought really hard today and swam well. I am extremely pleased with where this group is at as we prepare for the Patriot Invitational in a couple of weeks.”
Minford won two of the five events in which the Raiders posted the top times – finishing the 200-yard individual medley in 2:01.54 and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:01.81.
Sophomore
Ryan Westley had several important freestyle swims to help pace the Raiders. In addition to an individual victory in the 100-yard freestyle, Westley swam the opening leg of the second-place 200-yard medley relay and the first-place 200-yard freestyle relay.
The freestyle relay squad, swimming in the final event of the day, posted a time of 1:28.73 that was .07 seconds faster than the Fighting Scots.
Swimming the anchor on that relay was junior
Eddie LaNoue, who also achieved an individual victory in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.52 seconds.
“We went up today against a group of really strong Edinboro swimmers and their competition brought out the best in us today,” Verge said. “This group competed so hard today after a tough road trip last night against an extremely strong Clarion team.”
Senior
Joe Keefe surpassed the PSAC qualifying standard in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 55.42 seconds. He was .01 seconds ahead of the standard, while Westley was .01 behind the standard in the 100-yard freestyle.
Senior
Evan Manning swam on the 200-yard medley relay and also placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing just behind Minford with a time of 1:02.31.
Freshman
Brennan Wolter, who completed the 1,000-yard freestyle last night at Clarion in 10:30.28, swam the same event on Saturday and improved his time by eight seconds after touching the wall in 10:21.98.
“If this group continues to compete at this level and maintain the positive attitude that it is has right now, then we are capable of many great things this season,” Verge said.
Shippensburg will compete November 17-19 at the Patriot Invitational from George Mason.
