J. Edwards, Flick Shine For Volleyball But Raiders Drop Matches to Kutztown, Wheeling Jesuit

SU edged in five sets by Kutztown before falling to WJU in straight sets

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University volleyball team got 64 combined kills from sophomore Jill Edwards and junior Erin Flick in its two matches on Saturday afternoon from Heiges Field House but dropped both contests, losing 3-2 to Kutztown and 3-0 to WVIAC frontrunner Wheeling Jesuit.

Shippensburg (10-18, 5-10 PSAC East) held a 2-1 lead over the Golden Bears, the second-place team in the PSAC Eastern Division, but could not hold on for the victory. Set scores were 23-25, 25-17, 19-25, 25-20 and 15-9.

SU rallied from a 15-8 deficit and a 23-19 deficit in the first set by scoring the final six points of the opening frame to record the early advantage. The score was tied 19-19 in the fourth set before the Golden Bears closed the frame scoring six of the final seven points. The fifth set was at 10-9 before Kutztown scored the final five points of the match to earn the victory.

Edwards had 19 kills and 18 digs against the Golden Bears to achieve her 12th double-double of the season. She has totaled 469 kills this season – which establishes a new single-season career high. Flick had 17 kills on just four errors, hitting .325, to go along with three service aces and two block assists. Senior Libby Woffindin also had a double-double against Kutztown with 17 kills and 11 digs, hitting .191.

Junior Andrea Heimsoth had a season-high 59 assists against Kutztown – the second-largest single-game total in her career. Heimsoth totaled 93 assists between the two games and entered third place on Shippensburg's all-time assists list, moving past Heather Wilton (1989-92). For her career, Heimsoth has totaled 2,854 assists.

Wheeling Jesuit (22-3), a squad doing everything it can to be ranked atop the region, ripped 46 kills and hit .292 from the floor to achieve the victory by set scores of 25-16, 26-24 and 25-18. The Cardinals scored seven of the final nine points in the first set and later scored eight consecutive points in the third set when the score was tied 12-12 to tilt the match in their favor.

Shippensburg also hit efficiently in the second match of the day, posting a .215 hitting percentage. Edwards had 18 kills to just two errors and hit .432 – her second-highest efficiency of the season, while Flick had 10 kills to just two errors and hit .381. Junior Jenny Pry was also solid on the attack, posting eight kills to just one error and hitting .304.

Shippensburg caps off its homestand with one of its most important games remaining this season at 7 p.m. Tuesday when it hosts Millersville from Heiges Field House.

Notes: Woffindin needs four block assists to break Kali Antolik's school record of 258 set from 2006-09…Jill Edwards has 27 double-doubles in her career…she is 20 kills short of the single-season school record of 489 set by Jenn Fuhrman in 2000…Jill Edwards is also 24 kills short of reaching fifth place on SU's career kills list.
