FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Shippensburg University volleyball team avenged an early-season loss to Fairmont State on Wednesday night from Joe Retton Arena with a straight-set victory over the Fighting Falcons by set scores of 29-27, 25-21 and 25-18. The two teams met previously September 10 at Shepherd with FSU winning in five sets.
Shippensburg (9-16) got a game-high 18 kills from sophomore
Jill Edwards, who hit .268 from the floor, and nine kills from junior
Jenny Pry. Junior
Rachel Smicker had four kills and four blocks, as the Raiders combined for nine total blocks on the evening.
The Raiders also took advantage of 27 attack errors by the Fighting Falcons and served five aces, including two each from juniors
Andrea Heimsoth and
Erin Flick. Heimsoth added 35 assists while Flick had four kills and three block assists.
Shippensburg will begin a crucial stretch of play this weekend when it faces current PSAC East No. 4 seed West Chester at 7 p.m. on Friday. The Raiders will then face current PSAC East No. 2 seed Kutztown at 1 p.m. Saturday, WVIAC regional power Wheeling Jesuit at 5 p.m. Saturday and current PSAC East No. 3 seed Millersville at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. All four matches will be held from Heiges Field House.
